Hexagoons
HexaGoons is a turn-based strategy game where players deploy a small squad of powerful mechs to defend their tower against waves of enemies. Each mech has unique abilities that must be combined strategically while navigating a constantly shifting battlefield, where hexagonal tiles regularly flip and change the terrain.

Prototype
Since we knew form early on, that we had to work with limited art resources, we limited the games concept to a strategic mech-based experience.

Because the programming team had more experience with Unity, they developed a quick prototype in that engine, which became the foundation for the rest of the project.

One of the biggest issues we identified early in development was the readability of the battlefield, which made it difficult for players to quickly understand the situation.

Development
During regular meetings, a major focus was aligning the team on the highest-priority features and maintaining focus on the core gameplay.

We collaborated with an external artist for the UI, while continuing to refine gameplay features such as the abilities of the four different mechs.

Once the mech concepts were finalized, the VFX artist was able to polish the extensive visual effects work, which was an important part of the game’s visual feedback.
Challenges
Improving the visual readability of the battlefield remained one of the biggest challenges. Eventually, a complete rework of the asset color scheme was implemented, which significantly improved clarity for the player.

Another challenge was maintaining momentum as university workload increased for many team members. Dedicated project weeks proved to be the most productive periods, allowing the team to focus fully on development.
