Hiraeth -
The Lonely Astronaut

Hireath is a short film about wandering through a quiet, abandoned world while slowly realizing that the feeling of being lost might be part of the journey. The story follows an astronaut exploring empty places, searching for a sense of belonging.

Throughout the different and challenging phases of the project, I was responsible for location scouting, team management, organizing catering, coordinating meetings, as well as financing, sponsoring, and budgeting.

Start

The project originally began as a different film called “Zwischenwelt.”

It was planned as a 20-minute film with two main actors, multiple locations, and several VFX shots.

The shoot was scheduled in two blocks, and after months of preperation for the first one everything was already prepared: locations were secured, actors were cast, and the team was ready to begin filming.

Production

Challenge

On the second day of shooting, one of the main actors became seriously ill and the production had to be cancelled.

After reviewing possible rescheduling options, it became clear that we would no longer be able to finish the film before the deadline. In order to stay within the available time and budget, the team decided to move away from the original concept and develop a new project instead.

Results

This new project became Hireath – The Lonely Astronaut.

The new concept required a smaller crew and no dialogue, and the astronaut could be played by any member of the team. After the stressful experience with the original project, we chose a more abstract and flexible filming approach.

The final film is completed by a reflective monologue and a strong ambience that mirrors the theme of searching for direction during uncertain transitions.
